West Holmhead holiday cottage

Our comfy old cottage sits high above Loch Ken. It's in a lovely location, with a birchwood garden and views of green fields and oak woods. Very peaceful, on the edge of our organic farm.

This stone cottage is more than 250 years old, with sloping floors and original beams. Its cosy rooms are simply furnished with sturdy pine, comfy chairs, good beds, fresh linen and a wood stove.

You are very likely to see deer, as well as a multitude of other wildlife during a stay in West Holmhead holiday cottage.

We have a three star award from the Scottish Tourist Board - click on their logo for nearby attractions.

April 2008 update: Holmhead is looking lovely - we've just finished building an amazing rustic summerhouse - turf roof, home-grown timber and willow (and a bird is already building a nest there)! And a new bathroom, all fresh and bright. Daffodils under the trees, and red squirrels at the bird table. Bookings have been busy, but weeks still available are May 4-11, July 20-27, Sept 7-14 and Sept 21 onwards - please phone to enquire - 01644 420636.

This cottage is ideal for a relaxing holiday in Galloway, with walking and cycling on the doorstep (this single track road is known locally as "the Hidden Road"), through bluebell woods and over green hills. There are often red squirrels and deer in the garden, and you may see badgers, buzzards, red kite, ravens, wild geese, fox, otters and more. And there's a pair of traditional bikes, free, for your use.

We're 5 miles south of Balmaclellan (basic provisions); 13 miles north of Castle Douglas (all facilities); 20 miles from the Solway coast; 80 miles south of Glasgow and 60 miles from Carlisle (about 1 hour from the M6/M74 motorway), in S.W. SCOTLAND.
